Today on June 4 1999,was the first time I came across this site and just wish to offer my condolances to Matthews family and others that have lost loved ones due to hate crimes.I am gay and proud to be and support and believe that over time more shall rec gnize that it is not a fad to be gay and to realize that being gay is okay and that one shouldn't be afraid to come out or be for I realized that I was different at 5 yrs old and to have family that is supportive of ones sexuality is better, but some out t ere are to ignorant to realize this and have to learn to live with us,so that we can get along this path there will be struggles to overcome and ones that should not have to be crossed, such as Matthews.I hope I don't sound to ungreatful by what I had said erlier but but mean to say that Matthew was a Human being and will be missed by those who had a chance to share his life and belive that he shall not be forgotten for I'll pass this website to my friends and hope that they respond in the guestbook or even the voting website.Thank-you for the very informative website of Matthew, and that his death will not be invane for the convictions given to those ho had exstiguished his life. Thank-you.

I know this is late but my heart and prayers are with Matthew's family. Matthew is in a better place... and we are left to struggle with the horror of his death. Although I don't agree with the gay lifestyle... I more than believe they have the right to live whatever life they were given. I hope that made sense... I guess what I mean is... no one, not Matthew, not any human being deserves what these two punks did to him... ever! I am anti-abortion so I have had to re-think my prior pro-death penalty tr nd of thought. Life is precious... I honestly believe "God don't make no junk!" Matthew is with the Father... he will be kept safe. God help us all... we are in such a mess down here!

I hadn't heard much about what happened, since I am all the way down here in Australia.. but I am shocked, saddened and absolutely stunned at the mentality of the ignorant, violent, hateful people who took away this man's life. It's so frightening to thin that there is such evil and heartlessness in the world. I wish Matthew's family peace and comfort, and I wish Matthew wings to fly as high as he can.

Hi my name is Cheryl and I am 14 years old. First of all i want to say that im not gay but i support all gay rights and i have very deep feelings about this issue. I had heard of this horrid crime before but before i came to see the exent of it on this w bsite I didnt know the details. I think that the two individuals that did this are deeply disturbed and should be punished for what they did. I personally dont think they knew what they were doing. We are brought up in a society where it is alright to iscriminate people from their race, sex, or sexual orientation and we are taught that it is alright to do this, which is horrible because those things develope what a person is , what they are inside, what they are outside. My deepest sympathies go out t the parents and families of matthew shepard and i hope that we as a nation can somehow get something good out of this tragedy. again im so sorry for what you have went through and my prayers go out to you all. Sincerely -Cheryl-

Words of anger, pain, hatred are all rushing to my mind now.His life was snatched away because he was gay.The rape and humiliation he suffered while on vacation pierced my heart so deep.He survived through all that only to be killed later. How many more of M tthew must it take before these homophobic creatures realise what they are doing? We do not choose our sexuality,we are born with it and to be discriminated based on that provokes intense anger. To be killed because of that,I no longer can tell the difference between animal instinct and humanity, there is no difference in this case. All d bates on homosexuality will not come to an end because of all these homephobic people who should be cursed. No words can cure for Matthew is already dead. Our only hope now is that this boy's death will be make society view homosexuality in a brighter light Still this hope can never justisfy his death. MATTHEW --- I LOVE U DEEPLY AND THIS IS A UNIVERSAL LOVE THAT U HAD TOO.U WILL ALWIZ BE IN MY HEART AND EVER SO OFTEN,I WISHED I HAD THE CHANCE TO KNOW U,TO KNOW THE ANGEL INSIDE U.IM WRITING U THIS BECAUSE I KNOW YOUR SPIRIT IS STILL ALIVE AND U ARE READ NG IT.PEACE AND SOMEDAY WE WILL MEET.

First of all I would like to send out my prayers to the family and friends of Matthew. This crime was an act of ignorance, and stupidity. Matthew was a normal person just like I am and all gay, bi, and srtaight people. Just because these two idiots did no understand that to be gay is NOT a choice and were not educated on the subject at hand, they thought it was ok to go out and kill a harmless person such as Matthew. We should teach our youth better.

I think it's sick what those guys did to Matthew. It makes me, an 18 year old senior, fear for my life when I go anywhere. It's a shame that people can have so much hate for one another. I think those guys should be killed that exact same way that they killed Matthew. And let everyone watch them suffer. I pray that one day everyone will just be able to get along with each other regardless of age, sex, race, sexual prefference, rich, poor. It doesn't matter. We are all the same in God's eyes. Why ca 't everybody else see that? I moved here to Kentucky about 6 years ago from Florida. And you would think that you would get picked on more in Florida than here, but I was wrong!! I get harrased everyday at school and it makes me sick. Don't get me wro g, I do have a lot of friends here, but a lot of people here are un-educated on homosexuality. Every male student at this school thinks that just because I'm gay, that I'm attracted to them. It's a sick world we live in and we are all just going to have to stick together to survive. Rest in Peace Matthew. You're safe now! Chris

I want to let Matthew Shepard's family know that my thoughts and prayers are with them. To loose a child would be the worst thing that could happen, but to loose him because of his sexuallity and know he suffered would be so hard to overcome. I feel in my heart the two monsters will suffer greatly for the crim they have commited! I often wonder if they are being raped in jail, and how deserving they are of that. I know it may not be nice to hope this on another human, but after the humil ation, pain, and suffering they inflicted on Matthew, it seems fitting. The web master of this page should be very proud. You have done a great thing, I am also greatful that I was given a chance to speak out in Matthews defince. Thank you for carring, Kim

Dear Matthew, It hurt so much to read in the papers and watch on tv how you were treated by these heartless thuds. I can't help but wonder if it could have just as much been me or any other young gay male. What has happened is not right, and you will always be r membered around the gay community as the result of being out and being proud! But that's not it at all--it is NOT the result. We need to stick together to make sure that this never happens again. The loss of your life may help us in the future to gain round in our fight...but it will never bring back the cute guy from Wyoming. I love and miss you your friend, J:)

The reality of this situation has recently hit me, and very hard. I don't understand how the world can be so hateful. When will it be done? Have there not been enough victims yet? Not only gays, but different races, nationalities, and religons. Havn t there been enough sacrifices yet? As an American, Future Teacher, a Christian, a College Student, and possibly a future Methodist minister, I vow to help end this hatred. My prayers go out for the Shepard family. Even though I never knew Matt, I feel like a part of me has died as well, but a new fire deep in my soul has been sparked, a fire to fight hatred with love, and non-violence. In conclusion, I express my deepest sorrow for Matthew Shepard. If his dying will help end this hatred, then he has not died in vain. -God Bless -Bill 18m Ohio

I don't see how people could hate people so bad just because of how they are. Every time I read an article a e see Matthew's picture, I have to get to myself and cry. It bother's me so bad to see that something like this would happen. My heart and prayers goes out to Matthew's family and other gay people out there who are struggling to live in this awful world

I think that what those two boys did was just plan freaking stupid and very uncalled for. That is the reason that this keeps happening because people do it and the so called justice system does not even work and help the victims parents and friends out b setting an example with one of these stupid freaks. I am gay and I am terrified of something like this happening to me. I just feel really bad for his family, and I feel like I knew as much as anyone else did.

Hate is a horrible thing. It's time for all of us to le rn respect for each other, no matter who or what we love and believe in. Its quite unfortunate that we need to have something as tragic as this happen before we as a nation/world accept that hate and discrimination against gays, lesbians, blacks, hispanics etc. is for real.... People, this does not just happen to other people...y u, me, our friends and families are all vulnerable.....and we as humans are the only answer in stopping this hatred granted its very difficult when we have politicians, clergymen and the like spewing this crap from their mouthes..these are the people who re supposed to lead us but unfortunately some of these leaders are the very people who are spreading hate... it is very very sad..not to mention sick.... ...pull together people..stay strong... I am a mother of a gay child. Because I know my child so very well it is difficult to try to acknowledge and understand how anyone could hate this person. There is so much hate in our world & in many of our smaller towns. This may be due to lack of exposure & education in this area. My child is one of 3. They slept under the same roof ate the same cereals & had the same parents. Perhaps we should have been killed with my parents & my husbands or perhaps all of us everywhere along with the blacks the jews, the natives etc etc. It's o senseless. It hurts me deeply to know there is nothing I can do to protect my child from this kind of hate. We have brought into this world a caring loving & brave spirit who will not go away. I hope I'm speaking for many youth out there who need a parents support & love. On behalf of the ignorant adults out there I appologize for their lack of understanding.

In this age of mass media and entertainment news, violence has become almost a norm, put in front of our faces so often that I sometimes feel I have become numb to it. Partly that is out of self-preservation, since you can't worry about every single bad t ing that ever happens in the world, or you'd go mad. But the death of Matthew Shepard devastated me to the core. His face was not a fleeting image on the television; I found myself thinking about him, sometimes when I was alone, sometimes when looking in he face of a friend. Because strange as it may sound, his death affected me as though he HAD been my friend, and I suppose it's because he very well could have been. He is not unlike many of the people I befriend. I have many gay and bisexual friends and 'm grateful that I have them. This was a crime so atrocious, so appalling. I can't understand how anyone, absolutely anyone that has a shred of love left in their heart, could not be in mourning for that young man. To learn that religious people wish for Shepard to "burn in hell" because he was gay, shakes any minuscule amount of faith I might have once had in humankind. It says to me that real evil does exist amongst people. It does not matter to me that Matthew may not have been perfect, and he may not ave been a saint, but despite that he IS a martyr because he did not deserve to die, and his death was not in vain, for hopefully, some people will wake up and REALIZE that the bigotry and hate against gays, or blacks, or any other group, is WRONG and rid culous and atrocious and truly EVIL. His death certainly made me realize how hateful people still are, and that there is still danger afoot everywhere for anyone who is 'different.' And we all need to do something about that. I need to do something about hat. I will do everything and anything in my power to keep this unbelievable tradegy from happening again. If we all do that, then maybe we CAN keep it from happening again. I truly hope so.

I am deeply saddened by the tragic, torturous way Matthew died. I cannot imagine the horror and pain that poor man went through for 18 entire hours. I also am sadly disappointed in the society which, in subtle and blatant ways alike, enforce the views t at led McKinney and Henderson to torture and murder a fellow human being. If you remain quiet about the rights of homosexuals, you endorse what these two boys did. May God have mercy on us.

It been kind of a hard time for me since October. I never knew Matthew personally, and I feel empty inside that I never had that privledge. I had only recently come out (partically) at my college, and after Matthew's death, I keep finding myself pulling myself back inside that dark closet. I don't feel safe anymore and feel over cautious around other people. I know it sounds dumb, but that feelins is always inside of me. It's hard to sit in the student union having breakfast, while at the same time somebody in trashing gay people (US). It makes me feel sick inside that I don't have the courage to say or do something in my own defense. We all have a long road to go.... Matthew had a long travel infront of him, undoubtly a glorious travel, had he have been allowed to continue. I feel sad inside when ever I think of Matthew. I feel sad inside that I have lost the courage to stand up for something..... Bryan

The sensless death of a beautiful boy, because of his sexual orinentation is an outrage that no decent human being should have to tolerate. I read what happened to Matthew (in horrible detail) in an Australian newspaper, and was immediately reduced to tea s. My sincere sympathy goes to his parents and family, and as we aproach the year 2001, I sincerly hope and pray that a new century's gay youth will be able to live in a safer, more caring world, than the final decades of the 20th century. Matthew's in a uch better place now, and finally at peace.
